After a courageous battle with Leukemia, Gregory “Greg” Longpre, 68, of Stevensville, MI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Hanson Hospice in Stevensville. The support he received from family and friends was a deep comfort and appreciated immensely by Greg and his devoted wife, Inge.
In celebration of his life, a Mass will be offered at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, May 19, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 220 Church St., St. Joseph with Fr. Arul Lazar officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville. Friends may visit from 4:00 P.M., until 7:00 P.M., Friday, May 18, 2018 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Greg was born August 22, 1949, to T. Gregory & Carolyn (Lounsbery) Longpre. He graduated from St. John’s High School in Benton Harbor where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He then attended Western Michigan University where he received his bachelor’s degree. On June 17, 2000, he married the love of his life, Inge Botts Taylor. They enjoyed 18 wonderful years together.
Professionally, Greg was a mortgage banker for several financial institutions and later, co-owner of Anchor Mortgage. Greg was a long-time member and past president of both the South Haven and St. Joseph Kiwanis Club, as well as the Dewey Lake Home Owners Association. Over the years, Greg has been an avid golfer, a member of Berrien Hills Country Club and a member of a golf league at Indian Lake Hills. He and Inge have enjoyed volunteering for the Senior PGA tournament at Harbor Shores. Greg was also a member of the Sons of American Legion in Fort Myers, Florida, along with being a Patron of the Mendel Main Stage and member of the Racket Club. He devoted many years to the Y-Uncle program, during which time he made a positive impact on his Y-Uncle family. Greg also enjoyed coaching youth baseball and in recent years, wintering in Florida.
Greg is survived by his loving wife Inge Longpre; siblings Sandra Hopkins, Lynne (Andy) Rudell, Troy (Mary Anne) Longpre and Theresa Meador; brother-in-law Mark (Kim) Botts; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, as well as many wonderful friends, and his beloved furbaby, Lilli. Greg was preceded in death by his parents, step mom Betty Hettig Longpre, sister Laura Longpre, brother-in-law Mike Hopkins and father & mother-in-law Harry and Gaby Botts.
