Albert “Al” Hettig, 94, of St. Joseph, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017 at Countryside Nursing Home in South Haven.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 6, 2017 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd. St. Joseph, with Pastor Michael Roth officiating. Burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Military Rites will be provided by North Berrien Military Rites Team. Friends may visit from 9:30 AM until the time of service Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Caring Circle Hospice. Al was born March 11, 1923 in St. Joseph, MI to Herman & Natalie (Drews) Hettig. On January 4, 1943, at the age of twenty, he joined the United States Army Air Corp. Al proudly served his country during WWII as a CPL Machinist until he was honorably discharged on January 10, 1946. Upon returning from the war he worked for Whirlpool until he retired in the early 1970’s. On August 10, 1946 he wed Lillian Rimpel at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor. Al was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed antiques, building clocks and going hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his sons, Dennis (Ruth) Hettig of Grand Junction and Alan (Joy) Hettig of East Jordan; grandchildren, Lucinda Kneeland, Ann (Corey) Schaub, and Edward (Laura) Hettig; great-grandchildren Jonathon Hettig, Lillian Schaub, Avery Schaub and Austin Schaub; siblings, Donald (Ruth) Hettig, Anita (Jack) Mitchell, Michael (Sandy) Hettig, and Doris (Jim) Bucholtz and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Lillian in October of 1986 and brothers, Art Hettig, Herman Hettig Jr., Edward Hettig and Gaylord Hettig.
