Edith's Obituary

Edith Eichenbaum, 100, of Encinitas, California passed away on Monday, October 16, 2017.  Born Edith Kahn on July 11, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, she was admitted to the University of Chicago to study mathematics at the age of 16. Edith graduated in 1938 and became a social worker, helping families devastated by the Great Depression. After marrying Victor Eichenbaum on September 14, 1941, she followed him on each assignment around the U.S. during World War II, and worked for the military calculating projectile trajectories. After returning home, Edith and Victor opened Turner Furniture, a Benton Harbor retail institution serving the area for over 50 years. Edith is a longtime member of Temple B’Nai Shalom. Edith and Victor were married for 58 years and raised three children.  Edith is survived by her children, Mimi Drop, Los Angeles, and Jerry Eichenbaum, San Diego; her grandchildren, Tali Eichenbaum, Michael Eichenbaum, Dylan Drop, Adam Eichenbaum and Alex Eichenbaum; and her great grandchildren, Aven Eichenbaum and Ariel Eichenbaum.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor, and her son, Howard.  Services will be held at the Starks and Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., in St. Joseph on Monday, October 23 at 10:00 a.m., with Rabbi David Nelson officiating. Burial will follow at B’Nai Shalom Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Memorials may be made in her name to the University of Chicago or Temple B’Nai Shalom.
