Clara's Obituary

Clara Neuman, 91, was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, September 7, 2017. She was born to Herman & Caroline Kaatz in St. Joseph, which she fondly called home for all of her 91 years. Her first job was at the Tip Top Diner in St. Joseph where she soon became a favorite waitress of the local patrons. It was at this time that she met Harold Neuman on a blind date arranged by her sister Agnes. Many of their dates were spent on the beach where Harold drew airplanes in the sand and they would dream of having a family someday. Their romance was interrupted by the bombing of Pearl Harbor when Harold stepped up to proudly serve his country in WWII. Their love remained steadfast even after Harold was reported MIA and later declared a prisoner of war. Shortly after his return from the war, they married on July 21, 1945. They honored their solemn vows for 56 years until only death could part them with Harold’s passing in 2001. Clara’s greatest joy in life was being a devoted mother who selflessly raised her 4 children with endless love. Later in life she took up boating and fishing as a hobby and took great pride in posing with her prized catches. She and Harold also enjoyed traveling and participating in WWII POW gatherings and events. Through the years Clara welcomed 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren who she loved dearly and treasured each as a jewel in her crown of life. Left to mourn her passing and cherish her memory are her loving children, Jim & Judy Neuman of St. Joseph, Judy & Bob Hall of Stevensville, Debra Pinkston of Sylvania, OH and Marianne Genovese of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Amie (Tim) Edwards, Abby (Ben) Williamson, Mitch (Kadey) Pinkston, Daniel (Gili) PinkOren and Mia Genovese; great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Korey Koch, Lucas Edwards, Sam, Lyndi and Clara Williamson and Nili PinkOren and her loving sister Agnes Lay of St. Joseph. Preceding her in death was Laurie Koch her first grandchild who held a special place in Clara’s heart, sister Lorraine Harmon and brothers, Walter and Hank Kaatz. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 15, 2017 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services 2650 Niles Rd. St. Joseph with Pastor Michael Roth officiating. Clara will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Sarett Nature Center.
