Thomas Shubert

Thomas Shubert, 82, of St. Joseph, MI passed away Friday, September 08, 2017 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.  A Memorial Service will be held 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph with Pastor Tom Bird officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Three Oaks. Friends may visit from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the funeral home and again from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library. Those wishing to share a memory of Thomas online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com  Thomas was born May 5, 1935 in Oshkosh, WI to Harvey and Leone (Neuman) Shurbert. He graduated from Oshkosh High School on January 22, 1953. Thomas then attended Wisconsin State College (Oshkosh) where he received his Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education on June 12, 1957. He then attended the University of Indiana where he received a Masters Degree in Education. On August 20, 1960 he married Shirley Richard in Elkhart, IN. Thomas was a teacher at River Valley Middle School for many years teaching math and history. In his spare time he enjoyed traveling, gardening, golfing and playing bridge.  Thomas is survived by his daughter Jill (Russ) Uithoven; and grandchildren, Nicolas, Abigail and Rachel Uithoven; sister-in-law Grace Shurbert; and seven nieces and nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, son Timothy Shubert and brother Richard Shurbert.
