George's Obituary

George N. Katsulos, 89, of St. Joseph MI peacefully passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in his home with family by his side. George was born September 5, 1927 in Chicago IL to Nicholas and Helen (Kyriakopolous) Katsulos.  Later the family moved to Stevensville, MI where his family owned and operated a farm and trucking business for many years.  He graduated from Stevensville High School in 1945, served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, and on March 8, 1959 he married the former Mary Fotos in Chicago. George worked in the family business for many years before taking employment at Whirlpool Corporation, where he dedicated 26 years of service. While working at Whirlpool, he founded a landscape company which became known as Sno- Wonder Enterprises, named for the reputation he garnered from those saying “It’s no wonder they say let George do it.”  He retired from Whirlpool in 1979 and continued Sno- Wonder well into his 80’s.  He was known throughout the community for the may beautiful lawns he had installed. George dedicated his life to his family, was a loving and supportive father and husband, and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph Korean War Veterans organization. He was a self-taught skilled welder, fabricator and mechanic and had a brilliant mind for inventing and problem solving. When George repaired something, it was usually better  than it was originally. George was always young at heart and was known for his ability to have fun and make people laugh. He knew so many people in the community that it seemed he couldn’t go anywhere without running into someone he knew. He leaves behind two children, Katherine McCormick, and her husband Tom of Long Beach IN and Elaine Zoe Katsulos of Colorado, and a niece Georgine Pipikios. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary in 2013, his sister Peggy Lianos and a nephew John Lianos.  He is also survived by a family of cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church, 18000 Behner Rd., New Buffalo, MI with Fr. John Pilafas officiating.  Burial will follow at Lincoln Township Cemetery in Stevensville with military honors conducted by the North Berrien Military Rites Team.  Friends may visit from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with Trisagion Prayers recited at 7:30 PM Tuesday, August 22 2017 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church, or to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan.  Those wishing to share a memory of George and sign a Memory Book may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
