Margaret's Obituary

Margaret Klos, 91, beloved wife and mother, and long-time resident of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. Her loving spirit   will be missed by many. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017, at 6PM at First Congregational Church, 2001 Niles Avenue, St. Joseph, MI 49085, with Doctor Chuck Guerreno officiating. Margaret was born on May 22, 1926, in Dearborn, MI. Her work as a Medical Secretary led her to meet the love of her life, Henry Klos, at Harper Hospital in Detroit. Married in 1950, they remained happily together for 63 years until his death in 2013. Margaret and Henry moved to St. Joseph in 1950, where they built their ideal home on the river and raised their growing family of 6 children: Don, Ken, Mary, Jan, Nancy and Laura, along with a menagerie of pets and animals. Margaret thrived in her role as the head of this busy home. As a spiritual, loving and open person, she welcomed and accepted everyone from all walks of life, often expanding holiday meals to double in size. She loved to cook, always exploring new techniques and trying new recipes. Her home became the “place to go” for fun and laughter for all ages. Margaret loved nature, and there were frequent trips to her favorite spots, like Sarett Nature Center, Grand Mere and local beaches. She also enjoyed travel, especially the family’s annual camping trips all around the country, which she documented through photography and journals. She and Henry frequently canoed rivers throughout Michigan, birdwatching and enjoying the fall colors. An avid reader and always curious to learn, she embraced new technology, FaceTiming and texting with her children and grandchildren around the world, even as she entered her 90’s. Margaret also supported her husband and the community, with stints as Secretary and Treasurer at the Berrien County Medical Society Auxiliary. She was a long-time member at the First Congregational Church, Krasl Art Center and generously supported numerous causes and charities. Margaret is survived by her children, Donald Klos, Janet Klos, Nancy Klos and Laura Klos Sokol, along with ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, son Kenneth and daughter Mary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Southwestern Michigan Humane Society, Sarett Nature Center and the First Congregational Church.
