Gerry's Obituary

Gerry A. Smyth, MD, born in Quincy, IL in 1922 to Albert and Mary Smyth (née Alexander), died of natural causes in his home on Wednesday May 11, 2016.  Dr. Smyth is survived by his 3 children: Jennifer A. Smyth (Wayne Taylor), John F. Smyth (Maggie) of San Diego, CA and Douglas G. Smyth (Katie) of Minneapolis, MN and his 4 grandchildren: Jack, Tommy, Joey and Ella Smyth. Dr. Smyth survived childhood spinal meningitis, which led to a lifetime dedicated to the care of people and the science of medicine.   Gerry graduated from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis in 1947, after joining the United States Army for service to train as a doctor.  Later, during the Korean War from 1951-1953, he offered distinguished service in Tokyo. Known for his compassion and comforting bedside manner, Dr. Smyth was a fixture for over 50 years at Passavant & Wesley Memorial Hospitals, which later became Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. As a dedicated cardiologist and specialist in internal medicine, Dr. Smyth was respected by fellow practitioners, staff and patients; he also taught at Northwestern Medical School, introducing new doctors to the passion of medicine. Dr. Smyth had the pleasure of caring for many of Chicago’s most prominent citizens. Gerry lost his beloved Valerie one year ago, after 54 years of marriage. In addition to his family and his patients, Gerry had great passion for golf and the Chicago Cubs. A celebration of life service will take place at:The Chapel of Ascension Cemetery 1920 Buckley Rd. Libertyville, IL  60048 on Monday May 16at 11 am?, followed by a burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lake Forest, IL. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
