Elmer's Obituary

Elmer L. Mack, 98, of St. Joseph, MI, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Caretel Inns in St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 9, 2016 at Lakeshore Baptist Church, 5411 Cleveland Ave., in Stevensville with Pastor Duane Anderson officiating. Friends may visit from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Sunday, May 8, 2016 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Service, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Per Elmer’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to Lakeshore Baptist Church, 5411 Cleveland Ave., Stevensville, MI 49127 or Forgotten Man Ministries, 919 Port St., St. Joseph, MI 49085. Those wishing to share a memory of Elmer online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com Elmer was born March 2, 1918 in Butler, IL to Amos and Alice Mack. Elmer served his country in the United States Navy during WWII aboard the destroyer USS McDougal. He married his wife, Dorothy Ann Harris, on June 22, 1947 in Arlington, Massachusetts and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri.  Elmer worked for American Electric Power in South Bend, IN before transferring to the Cook Nuclear Plant in 1971.  He retired from Cook in 1983. Elmer and his wife were active members Lakeshore Baptist Church in Stevensville. Elmer accepted Christ as his Lord at age 19 in Joplin, MO, and his life’s motto was “To be saved is to serve.”  He was a man with a deep love for God.  Though soft-spoken, his life was a wonderful example to many.  He was a silent servant, always doing things behind the scene for his church and his family. Elmer is survived by his daughter Deborah (Chuck) Gearhiser of St. Joseph; daughter-in-law Melinda (Jeff) Hiscock of South Lyons, MI; six grandchildren Bethany (Shannon) Hardy, Nathan (Kim) Tribble, Michael Gearhiser, Connor Mack, Elizabeth and Adam Hiscock; five great-grandchildren Cameron and Meghan Hardy, Bailee Tribble, Jade Fancher, Danielle (Eric) Jacobsen; two great-great-grandchildren Trinity and Xander Jacobsen; and nieces Marion (Dan) Crowder, Elaine McNeice and their families. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Ann Mack, son David Jason Mack, parents Amos and Alice Mack, sister Evelyn (Binnquist) Mack, and brothers Lester and Ross Mack. Elmer’s family would also like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the staff at Caretel Inns of St. Joseph for their outstanding care and support.
