Donald's Obituary

Donald B Carter of St. Joseph and formerly of Kalamazoo died on February 28, 2016 after a long illness. Don was born and raised in North Carolina.  He received his education at NC State and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he earned a masters in physics and a doctorate in biochemistry.  Don changed his course of study from physics to biochemistry in graduate school, believing he could have a more direct positive impact on humanity in the field of medical research.  He loved mathematics, science, and nature.  Don retired from Pfizer in Kalamazoo (formerly The Upjohn Company) as a senior research scientist. Don was devoted to his sons and spent many years coaching their baseball and basketball teams.  He is survived by his wife, Jane Boerma Carter, their two sons, Will and Ben, all of St. Joseph, and two brothers and their families of Raleigh, NC.  A private memorial service has been held. Memorial donations may be made to National Stroke Association at www.stroke.org or to the Kalamazoo YMCA Endowment Fund through the Kalamazoo Community Foundation at www.kalfound.org.
