Ruth's Obituary

Ruth Baker Hahn passed away on March 2, 2016, while vacationing at her daughter’s in Arizona.   A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 12, at Saron Lutheran Church, 510 Main St., St. Joseph with Rev. Joan Oleson officiating. Private burial at Riverview Cemetery will precede the service.   Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Morton House, Lutheran Social Services of  Michigan or Saron Lutheran Church.  Those wishing to sign Ruth’s Memory Book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.  Ruth was born August 27, 1924 in Toledo, Ohio to Clarence and Elizabeth (Watson) Baker. She graduated from Scott High School and University of Toledo. She was united in marriage to Emil Hahn, in Toledo on September 26, 1953 and resided for the rest of her life in St. Joseph, Michigan, in the home they built together. She was a high school teacher in Loraine, Ohio; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Eau Claire, Michigan.   Ruth truly had a servant’s heart. She was a volunteer at Lakeland (Memorial) Hospital, Soup Kitchen, Krasl Art Center and a docent at Morton House Museum. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, American Association of University Woman (AAUW), and Retired Teachers of Berrien County. Ruth was a charter member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, where she served in many capacities over the years: Sunday School Teacher; Mission Committee Chair; Bible Study Group Leader. She is currently a member of Saron Lutheran Church.  Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Emil in 2005, and sister Jean who resided in California.  Ruth and Emil’s great pride and joy were their children and grandchildren. Deborah (Eric) Standen of St. Joseph, Jonathan (Mary Jo) of Canton Michigan; Christine (Greg) Beatty of Chandler, Arizona and Kathy Hahn of Southfield, MI. Eight grandchildren: Edward (Amanda Bruce) Standen of St Joseph; Phillip (Emily) Standen of Mirmar, Florida; Timothy Standen currently at U of M; Andrew and Matthew Beatty, both of Tempe, AZ; Laura Hahn of Chicago; Kelly Hahn Minneapolis; and Julie Hahn currently at U of M; Great grand daughters Katie Jo and Elizabeth Ruth Standen of St Joseph, MI.  Close family friends; Flora, Aden and Austin Kamala. She loved their calls and visits, and looked forward to watching the events and activities that they were involved in. She is also survived by niece Marybeth (Greg) Hall of Fullerton, California; cousins; Sue Baker, Patti Branyon, Judy Schnorf and their children.  Ruth touched many lives and will be greatly missed.  She was a friend and second mom to so many, always available with a smile, hug and a kind, concerned word.
