Richard Maahs

Richard ‘Sonny’ Maahs, Jr., 60, of Benton Township, MI passed away on Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Hanson Hospice Center surrounded by family and friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI.   Sonny was born in Benton Harbor, MI on September 14, 1955 to Richard and Helen (Rein) Maahs, Sr.  Sonny was employed by JL French before his retirement. He was an avid fisherman and had a great love of dogs. Sonny especially loved and was loved by children. Sonny was an uncle to most he met, a father figure to quite a few and was loved by many. He will be greatly missed.   Sonny is survived by his sister – Julie Boone of Benton Township; niece – Beverly (PJ) Yakel; nephews – John (Tina True) Lawrick and Shane Lawrick; great niece – Tiffany Arthur; great nephews – Justin Arthur and Bryce Lawrick; and a great great nephew – Anthony Benya. He is preceded in death by his parents – Richard and Helen Maahs.   A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, Dec. 18, 1:00 P.M., at Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home in St. Joseph, with Pastor Bill Bridgman officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service from 12 noon until 1:00 P.M. on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville, MI.
