Joseph “Papa Joe” Angelo, Sr., 94, of Benton Harbor, passed away, Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Caretel Inns of Lakeland. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 17 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd.,  St. Joseph with Rev. Joseph Angelo, III officiating.  Military Rites will be conducted by the North Berrien Military Rites Team.  A time of food and fellowship will follow the service in Starks & Menchinger Community Room.  Memorial donations may be made to the North Berrien Military Rites Team.  Those wishing to sign Joe’s Memory Book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Joe was born April 18, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Anthony and Theresa (Pica) Angelo.  He served his country in the US Army during WWII.  On September 24, 1942 he married the former Frances A. Finehout in Benton Harbor. He was a loving and generous man to all in his life and to those who crossed his path. Joe was young at heart even in his elderly years and had a good sense of humor. He was a people person who thoroughly enjoyed his time at work visiting with his customers.  In his free time, he enjoyed maintaining his house and farm and manicuring his yard. Joe and his family founded the Fairplain Plaza in the mid 50’s with the building of Angelo’s Supermarket and later Angelo’s Food Specialties, which he operated from 1958 to 2012.  He was a member of St. John-St. Bernard Parish, The Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph-Benton Harbor Elks, The Moose, and FOP Lodge #100. Joe is survived by his children Janice Angelo Hild and Joseph “Joey” Angelo, both of Benton Harbor; five grandchildren, Deborah (Steve) Hild-Warren, Phillip Hild, Jr., Holly (Chad) Angelo-Goodline, Pastor Joseph (Krissy) Angelo, Dr. Ryan Angelo; two great-grandchildren, Paxton Goodline and Gwen Angelo; his former daughter-in-law, Helen Rohm Angelo; his brother, Mike Angelo of Benton Harbor; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, on September 29, 2007, and siblings, Frank, Hank, George, and Tony Angelo and Julia Nicholas and Rosie Sobczyk.
