Frederick A. Schalon, 96, of St. Joseph, passed away, Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Christ Lutheran Church, 4333 Cleveland Ave., Stevensville with Rev. Philip Quardokus officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma with Military Rites provided by North Berrien Military Rites Team. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice at Home or Christ Lutheran Church. Fred was born in 1918 in St. Joseph to Frederick and Ida (Klann) Schalon. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1936 and was a graduate of the University of Virginia. Fred served his country in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant in WWII. Fred retired from Peoples State Bank in 1983 as a Branch Manager and was also previously employed at the St. Joseph Post Office. On August 16, 1941 he married the former Martha Hemming in St. Joseph. Fred was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church. He was an avid golfer and formerly a member of Pebblewood Country Club. Fred enjoyed hunting, reading, and especially spending time with his family.
Fred is survived by his children Joseph (Brenda) Schalon of Benton Harbor, Fred Schalon of St. Joseph, Virginia Schalon of Stevensville, Marian (Greg) Edinger of St. Joseph, and daughter-in-law Beverly Schalon of Lake Charles, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Toni Marie, Aaron, Katherine, Ryan and Michelle; seven great grandchildren; sister, Lillian Yircott of St. Joseph; and Antoinette Schalon of St. Joseph. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha, parents, son David Schalon, seven brothers and two sisters.
