Philip F. Smith

Philip F. Smith, 55, passed away November 20, 2014in Akron, Ohio. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Starks and Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Service, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.  Following visitation, a Celebration of Life gathering will take place at St. Joseph / Benton Harbor Elks Club, 601 Riverview Dr., Benton Harbor at 7:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan.  Those wishing to share a memory of Philip may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Philip was born June 1, 1959 in Benton Harbor to William M. Smith and Louise DeHaven Smith.  After graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1977, Philip received extensive training in environmental clean-up and was employed as a heavy equipment operator forCanonie, Inc., Oselka Construction and Cape Environmental among others.  He enjoyedhis work and traveling all across the United States.  Philip was an avid fisherman, fan of Michigan State University, Chicago Cubs and Bears. He took great pride in being a father and provider for his family who he especially enjoyed spending time with and who will deeply miss him. Philip is survived by his childrenWes, Melody and Drake Smith all of St. Joseph, brother Will (Jeannette) Smith of St. Joseph, sister Cathryn (Tony) Canonie of Coloma, nieces Anna Davis of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Maggie Smith of St. Joseph,former wife and best friend, Pam Smith, of St. Joseph and girlfriend, Karen Phile and her son, Corey Jaye of Ohio.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
