Carroll's Obituary
Carroll Cuthbert Spafford of Stevensville, MI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, at the Hanson Hospice Center. He leaves behind his daughter, Rebecca Myra Spafford, of Fort Collins, CO, his son and daughter-in-law, George and Rowena Spafford, grandchildren, Paolo, Alyssa and Erika Spafford, of St. Joseph, MI, and his sister, Phyllis Weintraub, of Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alpha Lee Turman, infant son, Paul Spafford, parents, George H. Spafford and Hazel Holmes, older brother, George Kendall Spafford. Carroll reached the milestone age of 88 years before joining our Creator.
Born in Boston, MA, his family moved to Derry, NH, where he graduated from Pinkerton Academy in 1945. He enlisted in the US Army and spent 19 months in Korea at the end of WWII. He received an undergraduate degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1949 and an MBA from Ohio State University in 1955. He has previously worked for Ford Motor, University of Michigan and as an instructor at Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, MI, where he and Alpha raised their family. In 2002, they moved to Stevensville, MI, to be closer to their 3 grandchildren.
Carroll, along with his wife, volunteered much of their time at Junior Achievement and Doris Klaussen Developmental Center in Battle Creek, MI, helping children with special needs. He was devoted to his family and brought cheer to those who knew him. He was a loving husband, supportive father/in-law and was a doting grandfather with a very sweet tooth to boot!
Visitation is at Starks & Menchinger in St. Joseph, MI, on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, from 6:30 – 8:45 PM. After a short prayer service at 7:40 PM, a closed casket visitation and sharing of happy memories of Carroll will take place until 8:45 PM. Funeral mass will be at St. Joseph Catholic church in downtown St. Joseph, MI, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014. A luncheon will follow at the Rose Center. Carroll’s final resting place will be at the Battle Creek Memorial Park, in Battle Creek, MI.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to benefit the Doris Klaussen Developmental Center and the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary in Battle Creek, MI.
