John's Obituary

John A. Mack, 72, of St. Joseph, passed away with grace and dignity,  Saturday, October 18, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. John was born April 21, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Alford & Evelyn (McDonough) Mack.  He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1960 and was a proud member of both the baseball and basketball teams.  He attended Benton Harbor Community College where  he  continued to play basketball . He transferred to Western Michigan University and was a member of the TKE fraternity   graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business. John enjoyed all sports and participated in bowling, golf and racquetball leagues.  His  love for baseball continued as a Little League and Babe Ruth baseball coach, where he guided many of the teams to championships. John had a strong work ethic and was employed at Indiana & Michigan Power Company before gaining employment at Whirlpool Corporation in 1976.   He retired as Manager  of manufacturing  after 27 years, having made many good friends along the way. On August 20, 1988 he married the former Stephanie Kevan in Kalamazoo.  John was an avid golfer and Notre Dame fan never missing a game.  He enjoyed tailgating, traveling to Florida, his Thunderbird and especially the time spent with his family.  He was known to jump out of his car and start dancing in the street to a favorite song.  John had a sharp wit about him and a great sense of humor. You could often find him reading his newspaper on his front porch, with a cup of coffee and a chocolate donut.  He will be missed by his family and numerous friends. John is survived by his beloved wife Stephanie; his children-Mickey Mack of Montego Bay, Jamaica, Cindy Mack & Valerie (Paul) Bryant, all of Orlando, FL, Anneliesa (James) Hundt of St. Joseph; four grandchildren-Amber & Taylor Artz & William & Whitney Hundt; one brother-David (Janet) Mack of St. Joseph; two sisters-Diane (Ron) Parker of Richland, MI, Jan (David) Schmaltz of St. Joseph; and the nieces & nephews that dearly loved Uncle John-Kristen, Kelly, Justin, Ryan  & Brandon.  He was preceded in death by his parents Alford & Evelyn Mack. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware, Benton Harbor, with Fr. William J. Jacobs, Jr. officiating.  Private burial will take place at a later date at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph.  Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, with Liturgical Prayers recited at 7:30 P.M. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph.  Memorials in John’s name may be made to the MDS Foundation or Hospice at Home.  Those wishing to sign John’s Memory Book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
