Agnes M. Andries, 100, of Bridgman, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 Delaware, Benton Harbor with Fr. William Jacobs, Jr. officiating with military rites performed by North Berrien Military Rites Team. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph with Liturgical Prayers recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home and Lest We Forget. Agnes was a truly loving woman who died peacefully at her home at Woodland Terrace. She was the youngest of eight children born to Thomas and Mary (Brophy) Woods in Easton, PA on July 22, 1913. Like two of her sisters, she was a registered nurse and graduated from Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. She worked as a public health nurse in Atlantic City and then joined the Army Nurse Corps in November 1942 in WWII. She was a 1st Lieutenant in the Eighth Army 76th Station Hospital. She served in Hawaii and Leyte, Philippines where she earned a bronze star. She also received the Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Plaque, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one battle star and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one battle star. After VJ Day her unit was sent to Sendai, Japan. After the war she married Joseph E. Andries and moved to Detroit. Their daughter is Kathleen Andries, MD.
Agnes had a gift to bring brightness into any room, loved to keep busy with friends, travel and whatever social activity was happening. Her large extended family experienced her selfless caretaking and generosity of spirit that made her so special.
Agnes is survived by her daughter Kathleen Andries of St. Joseph; five grandchildren Patrick Ray, Andrew Ray, M. Casey (Brittany) Ray, Daniel (Merrill) Ray and Kelly (Derek) Rothschild; four great grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews. There is a special niece who shares a birthday with Agnes, Marianne Brady. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings John, James, Jeremiah, and Thomas Woods, Julia Woods, Mary McDonald, Catherine (Raymond M.) Andries.
