Martha Schalon, 95, of St. Joseph, passed away, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 4, 2014 at Christ Lutheran Church, 4333 Cleveland Ave., Stevensville. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Services, St. Joseph. Martha was born in 1919 in Saskatchewan, Canada to Charles and Matilda Hemming. On August 16, 1941, Martha married Frederick Schalon in St. Joseph. She was formerly employed at Cooper Wells, and C & T Cleaner’s, her family’s business, in St. Joseph. Martha was a charter member of Christ Lutheran Church. In her free time Martha enjoyed golfing, sewing, needlepoint, gardening, bird watching and especially spending time with her family.
Martha is survived by her husband, Frederick; children Joseph (Brenda) Schalon of Benton Harbor, Fred Schalon of St. Joseph, Virginia Schalon of Stevensville, Marian (Greg) Edinger of St. Joseph, and daughter-in-law Beverly Schalon of Lake Charles, Louisiana; five grandchildren, Toni Marie, Aaron, Katherine, Ryan and Michelle; five great grandchildren; and Antoinette Schalon of St. Joseph. She was preceded in death by her parents, son David Schalon, and siblings Marvin Hemming and Ilene Scott.
