Donald Rollin Mummaw

“Bud” Donald Rollin Mummaw, 90, of Benton Harbor, MI, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, February 10, 2014, at Hanson Hospice in Stevensville, Michigan, with his wife and family by his side. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 17, 2014 at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 671 McAllister Ave., Benton Harbor with Pastor Jeremy Laitinen officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph with military rites. Friends may visit from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Service, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Those wishing to share a memory of Bud online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Bud was born June 29, 1923 in Stevensville, MI to Rollin & Lillian (Ott) Mummaw. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1942. Bud served his country in the United States Army Air Corp with the 50th Fighter Control Squadron from 1942 to 1946. During his service he earned the rank of Sergeant, the EAME theater ribbon, good conduct medal, victory medal, and Meritorious unit award. On June 4, 1949, he married Aneita Hein at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor, MI. They shared sixty-four years of married life as each others best friend. Bud was a master brick mason and owner of Mummaw Brothers Construction in Benton Harbor for over thirty plus years. Bud left his brick laying artistry on many residential and commercial buildings in Michigan. Bud’s proudest achievement is a self-supporting free-standing brick archway in Johnson Hall located on the campus of Andrew’s University in Berrien Springs. Bud was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church where he served on many boards. Faithful to his church, he gave unselfishly of his time and talents to keep the church and school in good working order, all one had to do was call and he was there. In 1987, after the church had a devastating fire destroyed the sanctuary Bud volunteered countless hours restoring the church so the congregation could worship there once more. Bud was an avid bowler and was still bowling at the age 89 in the senior league every Monday at Kelley’s Bowl. In 1967, Bud was the first left handed bowler to bowl a 300 in the Local Blossomland Bowling Association (there were only three 300 games bowled that year). In 1999, Bud was inducted in the BLBA Bowler’s hall of fame. In 2006, The BLBA City Tournament honored Bud and named the tournament after him. He attended the ABC National Bowling Tournament for 25 consecutive years and received an award for this achievement. Bud and his wife were also worldwide travelers and traveled to over thirty different countries and visited all fifty states at least twice. In his spare time, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, oil painting, playing and coaching sports, and spending time at their cottage. Bud was also a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. Bud is survived by his wife of 64 years Aneita Mummaw of Benton Harbor; daughter Mrs. Barbara Lange, son Tim (Vanessa) Mummaw both of Stevensville; grandchildren David (Micah) Lange and Katie Lange, James Mummaw and Jill (Jon) Mitchell; sisters Jessie Austad of Idaho and Mary Jane Edmonds of Oregon; and brothers Jack Mummaw of Berrien Springs and Bill Mummaw of Lansing, MI. plus many nieces and nephews and two special friends Jesse Adams and Dick Hahn. Bud was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law Donald Lange. Bud was a wonderful husband, father, friend and honest business man. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, church family, and bowling family. He has departed this life to be in his eternal home in heaven.
