Carolyn's Obituary

Carolyn Scowcroft, 80, passed away peacefully in St. Joseph of natural causes on Monday, March 18, 2013 surrounded by family. Carolyn was born August 23, 1932 to Elmer and Mildred (Kagel) Emery in Hagar Township. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School and attended Michigan State University. In 1953 she married her high school sweetheart, Alan Scowcroft. After a tour in Germany where Alan was stationed with the Army, the couple returned home and raised their family in Benton Harbor/St. Joseph. Carolyn and Alan fell in love with Grand Cayman and its people, and after Alan passed away in 1987 Carolyn made the island her home for several years before moving back to Michigan. She loved to travel. One of the highlights of her life was an adventure aboard the Concord jet followed by a cruise on the Q.E. II. Carolyn was a fiercely competitive gamer, be the game Bridge, Skip Bo, or scrabble. A victory over Carolyn was to be celebrated, because she always played to win. Carolyn is survived by her children; Linda (Dennis) Truhn, Glenn(Nancy) Scowcroft, and Ann (Jonathon Ellison) Scowcroft; by 7 grandsons; and by a great granddaughter. Also surviving is Carolyn’s sister, June Ellam. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Hitchcock, by her brother, Donald Emery, and by her parents. A Memorial Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd. St. Joseph. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northside Primary School of the Cayman Island or Hospice at Home. Those wishing to share a memory of Carolyn may do so online at www.Starks-Menchinger.com
