Filiberto's Obituary

Filiberto “Fil” Contreras passed away on Sunday, February 17th, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Fil was born in Chicago in 1924 and settled in Benton Harbor in 1945 where he worked with Benton Harbor Malleable, Ross Carrier, Clark Equipment, Maestro Corporation, and Whirlpool Corporation. He is survived by five children: Gloria (Eugene) Nimmo of Wabash, IN; Robert (Patricia) Contreras of Benton Harbor; Ellen (Thomas) Murphy of Fairfax Station, VA; Ricardo (Debra) Contreras of Chicago; and Susan (Michael) Wittman of St. Joseph; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and his loving sister and brother-in-law Maria and Robert Melcher of Stevensville. Fil will be remembered by all who knew him for his friendly and outgoing nature and as a regular walker at Orchards Mall and more recently as a walker in downtown St. Joe. He had recently become a resident at the Whitcomb. He leaves behind many friends and family. A Memorial Service will be held at 4pm on Sunday, February 24th, at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 1200 W. Glenlord Road, St. Joseph, MI, 49085, with visitation from 2-4pm, prior to the Service. Cremation has taken place and burial will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the charity of your choice.
