Millicent's Obituary

Millicent Chapman, 89, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully September 26, 2012 at her home. Born in 1923 in Plainwell, AR, where she grew up, she later made her home in Michigan with her husband Roy Chapman. Millicent was a lover of books and literature, leading her to a career teaching English Literature. She began teaching in her home state of Arkansas and retired in 1980 from Coloma High School where she started her local teaching career in 1955. She had many fond memories and wonderful stories about her former students and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Chapman, her parents Frederick and Ruby Pickens, and her brothers Dale and Keith Pickens. She is survived by her daughter Donna Vanderveen, son-in-law Pete Vanderveen, daughter Susan Chapman and son-in-law Mark Hribar, grandchildren Amy and John Vanderveen, and her special cousin Reva Fletcher. A Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church, 902 Broad St., St. Joseph at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012. According to Millicent’s wishes, she has become an anatomical gift to the University of Michigan Medical School.
