James's Obituary

James N. Leng, 79, of Stevensville, MI, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 12:00 noon at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5659 St. Joseph Ave. Stevensville, MI with Rev. Brett Ehlke officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will follow at a later date in Riverview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Those wishing to share a memory of James online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com James was born December 21, 1932 in South Bend, Indiana to Herbert and Ledolia (Ellis) Leng. On September 29, 1956, he married Delores Schermer in Benton Harbor. James served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. During his military service, he had the distinction of being the escort to the children of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He retired from AEP as a Senior Technician after 43 years. James was an active member of St. Paul’s and the Stevensville American Legion Post 568. He loved nature and being near Lake Michigan. He especially enjoyed the fly-in fishing trip that he took to Canada one year. He enjoyed traveling with his family on their many trips to Disney. Family was the most important thing to James. James is survived by his wife, Delores; daughter Debbie (Mark) Freier of Howell, Michigan; son Randy (Kathleen) Leng of St. Joseph; 3 grandchildren Anne Freier, Katie Freier, and Nathan (Angela) Freier; sister Donna Copp of Smith’s Falls Ontario; mother-in-law Ann Schermer St. Joseph; brother-in-law Roger (Kathy) Schermer, Stevensville, MI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
