Marla Jean Humes

Marla Jean Humes, 70, of Stevensville, passed away Monday, April 23, 2012 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., St. Joseph with Fr. James Morris officiating. Cremation will follow with private burial at Graceland Cemetery in Bridgman. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph with Liturgical Prayers recited at 7:30 P.M. She graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. On August 26, 1966 she married Kenneth Humes in Zeeland. Marla spent 24 years teaching English, starting as a substitute at various schools in the area, but spending the majority of her career at Lakeshore High School & Middle School. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Lakeshore Education Association, Michigan Education Association, and the National Education Association. In her free time Marla enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, quilting, sewing, and cross stitching. Marla is survived by her husband Ken; her daughters-Laura Humes of Vacaville, CA, a Captain in the US Air Force, Amy Humes of St. Joseph; and two brothers- Thomas (Nita) Bos of Hamilton, MI and Edward (Claudia) Bos of Zeeland. She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant son Matthew Humes on February 13, 1972.
