Herb's Obituary
Herbert H. Hahn, 87, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Lakeland Medical Center. Herb was born January 9, 1924 in Eau Claire, MI. On October 17, 1948 he married Elizabeth Koutas, who survives. He is also survived by his daughter Lynette (Paul) Trautwein, and son Jim Hahn. In addition, he is survived by his five loving granddaughters Rachel (Nick Anderson), Cristy, Sarah (Justin) Dalton, Amy Trautwein, Kelsey Hahn, and sister Vera Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mathilda, sister Louise and daughter-in-law Bev Hahn
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 Wednesday, November 2 at Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd. St. Joseph; with burial to follow at North Shore Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 PM with a Orthodox Prayer Service at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 1 at the funeral home. Those wishing to sign Herb’s guestbook can do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Orthodox Christian Mission Center or Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen.
Through the 1950’s and 60’s, Herb was a builder of custom homes. He was a long-time member of Carpenters Local 898, and served on its executive board for many years. Herb was a General Superintendent during the construction of D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant. He was a long-time member of the Methodist Peace Temple in Benton Harbor, and served the church on its executive committee. After retirement, he devoted his time to the upkeep and maintenance of the church. Herb was devoted to his wife, his family, and his church. He had a strong faith in God and demonstrated his faith daily through his work. He was always there to pitch in and help those less fortunate, working for many years at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen, and numerous volunteer construction projects. Herb had a gruff demeanor, but a heart of gold. He was a man of many interests and talents, and was an avid reader, gardener, craftsman and mechanic.
