Deborah's Obituary
Deborah “Debbie†Mort
On July 13, 1948 in South Haven a courageous battle for life began for Deborah Ashley Mort and continued until her heavenly home was ready on August 18, 2011.
Debbie was the daughter of Richard A. and Jean L. Mort. As a Spina Bifida Paraplegic, Debbie faced countless challenges and surgeries but they did not dampen her zest for life and her love for her savior, Jesus Christ. As a young girl she had the honor of being the Berrien County Easter Seal Poster Child. After graduation from Lakeshore High School and Ferris State, Debbie joined the work force at R.A. Mort Supply. Debbie's love for people, crafts and music were evident as she volunteered her time and talents at her beloved Christ Lutheran Church, Hospice and attending craft shows with her mother. Debbie's home was always filled with music as she created gifts and decorations from plastic canvas and crocheting but all the time her favorite pastime was close by, her books, which gave her hours of pleasure.
Surviving are her mother Jean L. Mort, brother Yogi (Pam) Mort, niece Amber Mort of California and caregiver and best friend Joyce Totzke.
Preceding her in death was her father, Richard A. Mort.
At Debbie's request cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at Christ Lutheran Church, 4333 Cleveland Ave., St. Joseph on Monday, August 29, 2011 at noon. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at a luncheon following the service. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Lakeland Hospice or the Humane Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks-menchigner.com.
