Shirley's Obituary

God blessed us with the gift of Shirley Grace Hanley for 88 years and called her home on the morning of Friday, September 3, 2010. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., in St. Joseph with Msgr. Sears & Fr. Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may visit from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph with prayers recited at 7:00 P.M. Those wishing to sign the memory book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Born Shirley Grace Holden, May 13, 1922 in Joplin, Missouri to Grace Florence (Stein) and Howard Arter Holden. Her family eventually moved to Southwest Michigan and she graduated from Baroda High in 1940. Shirley is survived and dearly loved by her family: Patricia (Joseph) Harding of St. Joseph, Kathleen Teunis of Caledonia, Mary Shine, Christine (Patrick) Phelan, Elizabeth (James) Mandarino all of St. Joseph, Mark (Margaret) Hanley of Sun Prairie, WI; 26 grandchildren, Allen Harding, Kim Harding, Melissa Harding (Bill) Gibson, Angela Harding-Poll, Kerri Harding (Doug) deBest, Vail (Jackie) Harding, Jennifer Teunis(Brian) Savin, Sarah Teunis, Aaron Casey Teunis, Mary Elizabeth Shine (Mark) Huffman, Ben (Jody) Shine, Molly Shine (Craig) Cypher, Jacob Shine, Matthew (Ami) Shine, Joel (Laura) Shine, Kathryne Shine (Adam) Bishop, Breanne Shine, Martin (Juli) Phelan, Jeffrey (Leanne) Phelan, Gregory Phelan, Chad (Kristy) Mandarino, Jamie Mandarino (Joe) Spitale, Anthony (Katie) Mandarino, Joshua Mandarino, Elizabeth Hanley, and Amy Hanley; 38 great-grandchildren, Mariko, Tyler, Stephanie, Joely, Nathan, Madelynn, Grace, Connor, Cameron, Jayden, Jackson, Jeffrey, Holden, Grant, Lauren, Killian, Liam, Molly Grace, Reagan, Jackson, Coleman, Carter, Kaleb, Noah, Andrew, Matthew, Rachel, Lindsay, Delaney, Noella, Avery, Zachary, Samuel, Allyson, Ava Kay, Haley, Alex, Isabella; 1 great-great granddaughter, Sierra; two brothers, Charles Holden and Fred (Ruth) Holden both of Stevensville and many nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by her loving spouse of 60 years, Vail William Hanley, her parents and son-in-law James Richard Teunis. With a servant's heart, Shirley was active with; The Girls Scouts for 50 years and the Lakeland Auxiliary volunteering over 20,000 hours including a term as President. She also found time to be involved in the Marian Guild, Aquinas Club and St. Joseph Catholic Home and School Association. Shirley met her beloved husband, Vail, while working at Vail Rubber Works. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Shirley always put others needs before her own. She was a talented homemaker, piano player, seamstress, artist and had beautiful penmanship. Her greatest joy was hosting family gatherings. She was a phenomenal cook, pleasing all with her family recipes of pies and chicken with homemade noodles, among others. She enjoyed weekly breakfasts with her brothers at their “VIP” table at Sophia's. Shirley's Memorial requests are: Berrien Count Cancer Services and the Pediatrics Unit of Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.
