Betty Jean Schneider, 76, of Benton Harbor, MI, passed away peacefully at home on Sat., August 21, at her home. Arrangements have been entrusted with Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home of St. Joseph, MI.
Betty was born November 11, 1933 in Benton Harbor, MI to George and Lillie (Stanley) Couch. She was a 1951 graduate of Benton Harbor High School. On May 4, 1957 she married Duane Alvin Schneider. Betty was also a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing 1956. She was a Registered Nurse, having worked for Mercy Hospital for 10 years, Orchard Grove, and as a private duty nurse. Betty was a member of the Fairplain Presbyterian Church, and was also very involved with their soup kitchen. She was the Santa Claus at Ace Hardware for 13 years; she loved being a clown; she was very active in the Blue Star Mothers; she raised money for the Benton Harbor Tiger on the carousel; and was involved with the Benton Harbor class reunions of 1951. Betty knew no strangers, she was a friend to all and will be greatly missed.
Betty is survived by her husband-Duane; her children-Lora (Gary) Spencer of Benton Harbor, Tina Schneider of Benton Harbor and Darren (Jennifer) Schneider of Stevensville; seven grandchildren-Skyler, Kyra, Sage, Schyler, Carson, Collin and Tanner; a sister-Mary Sundquist of Benton Harbor; and many other relatives and special friends. She is preceded in death by her parents-George and Lillie, five brothers and three sisters.
A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Wednesday, August 25, 10:00am, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, with Dr. J. O. Hosler officiating. Burial will be at North Shore Memory Gardens. Visitation is on Tuesday from 5:00-8:00pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Star Mothers or to Hospice At Home.
