Mary's Obituary
BRIDGMAN – Mary Ann Hagelberg, 84, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Saturday, May 22, at Woodland Terrace surrounded by her family.
Mary Ann was born April 13, 1926, in Royal Oak, Mich., to Albert and Amelia (Brozovich) Yelencich. She was secretary to the superintendent of the Richmond (Mich.) Public Schools when she met Milton J. Hagelberg, who was a teacher at the high school. Milt and Mary Ann were married on June 22, 1946, in Richmond. They later settled in Traverse City, where they raised their family. When Milt retired in 1983, they moved to Sarasota, Fla., but spent summers at their cottage in Manistee County. They returned to Traverse City in 2000. Mary Ann was active in her church, worked for the United Way and National Bank and Trust in Traverse City, and was a volunteer at her children’s schools.
Mary Ann and Milt enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family. After Milt died in 2005, Mary Ann moved to Bridgman to be near her daughter and grandchildren and where she thoroughly enjoyed the staff and residents of Woodland Terrace. She was a member of Saron Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Mary Ann was a wonderful gardener and cook and a fierce bridge player. But mostly, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She is survived by three children – Shirley (Ronald) Klemish of Port Charlotte, Fla., Marilyn (Bradford) Frey of St. Joseph and Dr. Richard (Margaret) Hagelberg of Grand Rapids, Mich; seven grandchildren – Christopher (Diane) Bursian; Benjamin, Jocelyn and Hayley Frey; and Luke, Travis and Anne Hagelberg; a great-grandson, Connor Bursian; a brother, Ralph Arlin of Florida; a sister, Barbara Knight of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson Joshua Bursian; and three brothers – Frank, Joseph and Albert Yelencich.
Memorials may be made to Saron Lutheran Church or Hospice at Home. The funeral arrangements have been entrusted with Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home. Those wishing to share online memory may do so at starks-menchinger.com.
As she wished, she will be cremated, and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held June 13 at Saron Lutheran Church in St. Joseph.
