Michael's Obituary

Michael “Mike” Sterling Garland, Sr. of Coloma, went to meet his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2673 W. John Beers Rd., Stevensville on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Gerald Schroer and Rev. Jonathan Kruschel officiating. Friends are welcome to a visitation with the family at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Michigan Lutheran High School or Hospice at Home (South Haven). Those wishing to sign the Memory Book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mike was born December 24, 1944 in St. Joseph to Carl S. & Mary E. (Hennes) Garland. He graduated from Lakeshore High School in 1963 and attended Sam’s Technical Institute in Indianapolis. On September 10, 1966, Mike married Victoria “Vicki” Krivak at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Stevensville. He joined the US Air Force shortly after and served his country during the Vietnam War, stationed in Germany. Mike graduated from Lake Michigan College in 1978 with an Associates Degree in Industrial Controls. He was employed by Weldun International/Eagle Technologies, retiring December 31, 2007 after 28 years of service. Mike was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and treasurer of St. Paul's, and served on St. Paul's School Board, and served on St. Paul's & Michigan Lutheran High School's Foundation. Mike was a lifetime member of Camp Lor'Ray Campground in Muskegon where he formerly served as treasurer. Mike is survived by his wife Vicki; his son Michael (Jackie) Garland, Jr. of Maple Grove, MN; his daughter Melissa (Michael) Hawk of Fort Wayne, IN; five grandchildren-Michael III & Alison Garland, Christopher, Abigail & Timothy Hawk; his mother Mary Garland of Coloma; three brothers-John Garland of Berrien Springs, Charles Garland of New Troy, Tim (Dena) Garland of Watervliet; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jerry & Judie Wabeke of Greenville, MI. Mike was preceded in death by his father Carl in 1962, his brother Peter Garland and his sister Joan Langley.
