Lawrence Zuhl, 86, of St. Joseph, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 A.M. Saturday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Coloma American Legion Post #362, VFW Post #1137 of Benton Harbor & VFW Post #6803 of Watervliet. Lawrence will await the Resurrection at Riverview Cemetery Columbarium. Friends may call beginning at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Zuhl was born June 18, 1923 in Benton Harbor to Frank & Sophia (Mathwey) Zuhl. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1941. Lawrence served his country in the US Army during WWII. He was in the third wave of troops to land at Omaha Beach. On May 16, 1948, he married the former Marian Hendrix in St. Joseph. Lawrence owned and operated Zuhl Construction, retiring in 1997. He built many homes in Stevensville and in the City of St. Joseph. He was also responsible for developing two mobile home parks-Glen-Aire Estates in St. Joseph and Birchcrest Estates in Niles.
Lawrence is survived by his daughter Michele (Douglas) Miller of St. Joseph; his son Gregory (Katherine) Zuhl of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren-Jami Miller, Kevin Miller, Keith Miller, Lauren Zuhl & Elliott Zuhl; four great-grandchildren; his brother Frank Zuhl, Jr. of Sawyer, MI; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marian in December 1994, and by two sisters-Alice Merle & Lorraine Zuhl.
