Bernard's Obituary
Bernard Meyer, 83, of Stevensville, passed away, Thursday, October 18, 2007 at Jordan’s Nursing Home in Bridgman surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church Street, St. Joseph with Monsignor Eugene Sears officiating. Friends may call from 6-8 P.M. Sunday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rosary beginning at 7:30 P.M. Memorials may be made to the Catholic Community Center in Benton Harbor or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Bernard was born January 8, 1924 to Bernard F. and Wilhelmina (Rieman) Meyer in Ottawa, Ohio. On May 3, 1952 he married the former Dolores McManus and together they had three children. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and a member of the National Association of Cost Accounts as well as the Knights of Columbus. Bernie was also a volunteer with the soup kitchen and the Catholic Community Center and was chairperson for S.H.A.R.E. He served in World War II as a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force stationed in Italy and received the Air Medal from the commander general of the 15th AAF for “meritorious achievement in aerial flight”. Bernard is survived by his wife Dolores, their children, Kathleen (Bill) Hanley of St. Joseph; Debra (Charlie) Thomas of Winter Park, FL and Judith (Ken) Miedema of Stevensville; Seven grandchildren, Brian, Caitlin and Kevin Hanley; Megan and Michael Thomas and Lauren and Greg Miedema and one sister, Freda Schmenk. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
