John was born in Zeeland, MI, on June 28, 1917, to Grace (Van Dyke) Vanderstelt and Henry Hardenberg, immigrants of the Netherlands. John made 32 voyages across the oceans while serving as an Army Surgical Technician onboard the U.S.S. Blanche F. Sigman during WWII. He was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon and the European African Middle Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars. He retired after 30 years as a supervisor at Modern Plastics Corporation.

He was passionate about Lake Michigan, her beaches, and power boating/sailing. He loved his many trips to Las Vegas and wintering in Florida.
