Frederick E. ?Fred? Stringer, 96, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2005 in his son?s home in Benton Harbor.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:30 A.M., Friday, August 12, 2005 at the First Baptist Church, 902 Broad Street, in St. Joseph with the Rev. Marlo Fritzke officiating. Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Thursday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Burial will be at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Fred was born on June 6, 1909 in Fruitport, Mich., to Sam W. and Nettie B. Stringer. At age 10 his family sold their farm and moved to Benton Harbor. On May 25, 1935 he married Lena Marie Martin. They were blessed with a son James. Fred was employed with Whirlpool Corporation and retired after 33 years of service. In his youth he loved boxing, diving, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of both the Golden Glove Team and the Twin City Aqua Fins Team. Fred loved the outdoors and was active in the Boy Scouts for many years. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in St. Joseph. Fred also worked with the Boy?s Brigade and served as a School Board Treasurer.
Fred is survived by Lena, his wife of 70 years; son James F. (Alicia) Stringer, Sr.; 6 grand-children – Maria Christina (Ernest) Khaw, James F. (April) Stringer, Jr., Michael S. (Karen) Stringer, Matthew J. Stringer, Theresa Marie Stringer, and Jennifer Melissa (Bobbie) Simmons; and 13 great-grandchildren – Nathan, Hannah, Rachel, and Lydia Khaw, Emily and Ethan Stringer, Josiah, Abigail, and Anna Stringer, Michael, James, Zachary and Alexander Stringer, and Alisha Stringer Scales.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, his infant twin brother, and brother Samuel.
