Sophia's Obituary

Sophia Prokopchuk, 78, of Stevensville, formerly of Eau Claire, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005 at home. The Resurrection Service will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Monday at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware, Benton Harbor. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rosary recited at 7:00 P. M. Memorials may be made to St. John-St. Bernard Parish, St. Michael Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church in Mishawaka, Michigan Diabetes Association, or Lake Michigan Catholic Schools. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the guest book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mrs. Prokopchuk was born May 3, 1926 in Tiehliv, Ukraine to Sydor & Mary (Dudek) Platsko. On May 17, 1947 she married John Prokopchuk at St. Vladimir Cathedral in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. They moved to the United States and settled in Eau Claire, where together they owned and operated a fruit farm on Park Rd. Sophia was a member of St. John-St. Bernard Parish, St. Michael Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church and the Ladies Sadality Group of St. Michael?s. She was a woman of her faith. Sophia enjoyed reading, and was very proud of her Ukrainian Heritage. She enjoyed her native cooking & culture, and also traveling and tending to her rose garden. Sophia was a very family oriented and giving person, she will be dearly missed by her family & friends. Mrs. Prokopchuk is survived by two daughters-Marie (Jose) Choquehuanca of Katy, TX, Jeanne Prokopchuk of Stevensville; four grandchildren-Tonia (Michael) Bibbo of Okinawa, Japan, Eliana Choquehuanca of Miami Beach, FL, Jeanne Choquehuanca of Katy, TX, Michael Prokopchuk of Stevensville; two brothers-Nick (Sophia) Platsko & John (Mary) Platsko, both of Leamington, Ontario, Canada; and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John on June 14, 2001, three brothers-Michael, Harry & infant Michael Platsko, a sister Anna Maksymiak, and two nieces-Sally Madill & Elizabeth Platsko.
