Margaret ?Peg? Berndt, 83, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2005 at Yost Adult Foster Care Home in St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Burial of ashes will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Coloma American Legion Post #362, VFW Post #1137 of Benton Harbor and VFW Post #6803 of Watervliet. Memorials may be made to Parkinson?s Disease Foundation or the charity of the donor?s choice. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the guest book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mrs. Berndt was born August 23, 1921 in Benton Harbor to Ross & Mathilda (Tiefke) Rohl, Sr. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1939. Peg attended nursing school and became a registered nurse. She served her country in the US Army as a nurse from 1945-1947. Peg was employed locally as a registered nurse at the old St. Joseph Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Shoreham Terrace Nursing Home, Whirlpool Corporation and various doctors offices in the twin cities area. On May 8, 1948, she married Robert Berndt, he preceded her in death on February 28, 1994. Peg was a former member of Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ in St. Joseph. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and playing cards. Peg is survived by two brothers-Ross Rohl, Jr., Glen Rohl; and her sister Polly Brewer, all of Decatur, MI, her god-daughter-Cindy Knight of St. Joseph; and several nieces & nephews. In addition to her husband, Peg was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters-Jane Ickes, Barbara Rohl, and a brother Fred Rohl.
