Cy's Obituary

Cy Valacak, 84, of Stevensville, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Orchard Grove Extended Care Centre in Benton Harbor. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 A.M. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church St., St. Joseph, with Fr. Thomas Martin officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens, with military rites conducted by Coloma American Legion Post #362, VFW Post #1137 in Benton Harbor, & VFW Post #6803 in Watervliet. Friends may call from 3-6 P.M. Sunday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with the Rosary recited at 6:00 P.M. Cy was born September 20, 1920 in Chicago to Paul & Helen (Lipnicon) Valacak. He graduated from St. John?s High School in 1938. Cy served his country in the United States Army during WWII stationed in the Pacific Theater where he earned the rank of Corporal and received the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with the Bronze Star. On October 4, 1947, Cy married the former Katherine Zver in Benton Harbor. Cy was employed at the former Frank?s Body Shop in Stevensville, retiring as manager after 35 plus years of employment. Cy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a life member of VFW Post #1137, and an avid White Sox & Notre Dame fan. Cy is survived by his wife Katherine; two sons-Mark (Kimberly) Valacak of Fenton, MI; Paul Valacak of Ann Arbor, MI; two grand-daughters-Alana & Paula Valacak; three sisters-Agatha (James) Filush of Grandville, MI; Rosemary (Robert) VanArkel of St. Joseph; Joann Shane of Benton Harbor; his brother-Thomas (Irene) Valacak of Midlothian, IL; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-Paul, Frank, & Vince Valacak; and three sisters-Mary Johnson; Helen Valacak; and Margaret Murach.
