George's Obituary

George Ashby, 91, of St. Joseph, passed away on Friday, January, 14, 2005, at Lakeland Continuing Care Center in St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Terry Tessari officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service also at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the volunteer program at Lakeland Continuing Care Center in St. Joseph. George was born to Alfred and Minnie (Martin) Ashby on August 31, 1913 in Fulton, Indiana. He worked as a chief clerk for Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company for 32 years until his retirement in 1976. George was married to Gladys Menges until she preceded him in death in 1970. On September 11, 1971 he married Marion Exum. George was a member of St. Joseph Masonic Lodge #437 and was the past master in 1966. George enjoyed growing roses in his rose garden. George is survived by his wife Marion; children- Patricia Ashby of Florida, Susan Allen of Michigan, Kay Duffy of Florida, Bruce Ashby of Michigan, and Kenneth Ashby of North Carolina; step-daughter Karon (Wayne) Shell of St. Joseph; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his first wife Gladys; parents; and brother Bruce Ashby.
