John's Obituary

Attorney John L. Globensky passed away on January 8, 2005 at his home.John was born on July 24, 1922 in Benton Harbor, the son of Dr. L.M. and Clara Globensky. Following graduation from St. John?s Catholic High School in 1940, Joh began his college career at The Citadel, the military college of South Carolina. In 1943, John?s entire class was activated into World War II. He served as a gunnery officer on the battleship Tennessee until the end of the war. He returned to graduate from The Citadel, from the University of Notre Dame Law School, and to receive a master?s degree in taxation from Harvard University. Upon returning to Benton Harbor, he began his law practice in 1952 with the firm of Gray and Gray, evolving over the years into Globensky, Gleiss, Bittner and Hyrns. In the past few years he has remained Of Counsel with the firm of Bittner, Hyrns, Riemland and Daly. He has been active in his community as a member of the Foundation Board of Lakeland Hospital, President of the former Chamber of Commerce, President of Point O? Woods Golf and Country Club, a member of the Board of Directors of Intercity Bank (now Chemical Shoreline), a member of the Board of the Michigan Maritime Museum, a board member of the Southwest Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the St. Joseph River Yacht Club, the St. Joseph Junior Foundation, Rotary and Elks. He served many years on the Executive Committee of the Berrien County Republicans as its Vice President. He was the general chairman of each of the three successful Congressional campaigns of David Stockman, member of the Berrien County, Michigan, and American Bar Associations. He loved to ski, play golf, sail, dance, travel, be with his family, and to have a glass or two of merlot. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Janet (Mark) Zielke; son, Jack (Ashley) Holton; step-daughters?Susan (David) Timoner and Anne (Joe) Caliento; grandchildren, Mark and Elizabeth Zielke and Ina and Emery Holton; step-grandchildren, Reed and Grayson Timoner, and Augie and Marley Frank. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11, at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 12, at the First Congregational Church in St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice at Home, the St. Joseph Junior Foundation, or the Southwest Michigan Symphony and Orchestra.
