Walter M. Decker, M.D., Radiologist, Dies at 63
St. Joseph ? Walter M. Decker practiced Radiology in the community for more than 30 years. He died early Friday morning, November 12, in a fire at his home.
Walter was born October 17, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan to Walter A. and Celia Decker. He attended Wayne State University for a combined medical program with the University and Medical School. He graduated Medical School in 1967, and then completed a radiology residence at William Beaumont Medical Center in Royal Oak, Michigan. As a Board-Certified radiolog8ist he served at Kimbrough Army Hospital, Fort Meade, Maryland during the Vietnam conflict, 1971-1973, and attained the rank of Major. He joined Radiology Associates of Berrien County in 1973 and practiced until 2003.
Walter took passion in traveling. He explored all seven continents, and almost toured every nation in the world before his passing. He often noted that he even reached ?Timbuktu?.
His family and friends will remember Walter for his affable idiosyncrasies and his overwhelming generosity. The staff and partners of Radiology Associates of Berrien County, the Lakeland Hospital Radiology staff, and the Hyszczak and Leahey families will deeply miss their dear friend.
Walter?s parents preceded him in death in 1980 and 1981. Sole survivor is his brother Russell Decker of St. Joseph, MI.
A Memorial Service will be held 5:30 P.M., Friday, November 19, 2004, at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph.
