Marguerite “Marge” L. Holmes, 96, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on October 3, 2004 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman. Marge was born on June 22, 1908 to William and Zadie (Williams) Gillenwater in Sweetzer, Indiana. She met her hMarguerite “Marge” L. She met her husband Franklin in Benton Harbor where they were married on February 12, 1925. They lived in Benton Harbor until 1942 when they moved to St. Joseph in their newly built home where she continued to live for the next fifty-eight years.Marge and her husband Franklin co-owned the Holmstead Restaurant with his brother and sister-in-law Tom and Fran Holmes on Napier Ave. She continued to work as a hostess for many more years until she retired. Marge loved to play cards and socialize especially in the later years with her friends at Woodland Terrace.Her husband Frank preceded her in death on July 1969. Her sisters Hilda Tomlinson, Hazel High, Opal Gillenwater, Bertha Gillenwater, Crystal Thar, and brothers Edward, Hubert and Cecil Gillenwater preceded her in death. Her last sister Eileen Aldrich died September 14, 2004.Her survivors include her only child Franklyn “Buzz” Holmes and his wife Sandra of Stevensville. Grandchildren are Megan Boesch and her husband Lt. JG John Boesch U.S.C.G., of California and Kevin Holmes of Stevensville. Aunt Marge is also survived by many nieces and nephews.There will be a Celebration of Life Service at Woodland Terrace, Red Bud Bldg., 8850 Red Arrow Highway, Bridgman on Thursday, October 7, 2004 at 3:00 pm. Burial will take place at a later date at Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Memorials may be made to Hospice.
