Leonard's Obituary

Leonard Polfus, 78, of St. Joseph, went to meet his Lord & Savior following a short battle with cancer, on Friday, August 13, 2004, at Caretel Inns of Royalton. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 18, at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph with Rev. Robert Moss officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville with military rites conducted by Coloma American Legion Post 362, VFW Post 1137 of Benton Harbor, & VFW Post 6803 of Watervliet. Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Southern Care Hospice of Kalamazoo or Berrien County Cancer Service. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the guest book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mr. Polfus was born May 15, 1926 in Benton Harbor to Gustav & Rose Polfus. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1944 and entered the US Army to serve his country during WWII. On December 17, 1949, he married the former Edna Loewen in Roseland, Indiana. Len was employed at Whirlpool and Leco for many years, before joining Benton Harbor Engineering from where he retired in 1988. He was a member of the First Church of God in St. Joseph for more than fifty years, and served as an usher for many years. Len enjoyed wood working and mechanics. He enjoyed fixing and repairing things around his home and also for others. Len was a soft spoken, honest man who loved spending time with his family & friends. Mr. Polfus is survived by his wife Edna; two sons-Dave (Sharon) Polfus of St. Joseph; Don Polfus of Coloma; his daughter-Sandy (L.T.) Harte of Sodus; four grandchildren-Megan & Jennifer Polfus & Kristen & Greg Harte; a brother-Harold ?Red? (Jean) Polfus of St. Jospeh; two sisters-Eleanor Burnoski of Ft. Wayne, IN; and Evelyn LaVanway of Stevensville. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant son Jimmy Polfus, and four brothers-William, Bert, Arnold, & Robert Polfus.
