Irvin's Obituary
Irvin G. Althage, 86, of Berrien Springs, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday at Pioneer Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church, 400 University Blvd., Berrien Springs. Burial of ashes will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Andrew University Art Student Fund or food for the Poor. Mr. Althage was born October 7, 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri to Erwin & Winifred (Vandover) Althage. He served his country in the US Army during WWII. Irvin graduated from Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis in 1948 with a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts Painting; and from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1951 with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts Painting. He was employed as an Art Instructor at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1948-1950. Irvin moved to Berrien Springs, then founded the Art Department at Andrews University in 1951. He taught Design, Printmaking, Drawing, Painting and Ceramics. He retired in 1969 as the Chairman of the Art Department. Following his retirement, he worked as a commercial artist for many years at University Press. Irvin has artwork in many exhibitions across the country.
Mr. Althage is survived by a daughter Jill (Larry Lefferts) Althage of Chicago; a son Craig Althage of Chicago; and his former wife Joyce J. Althage of Berrien Springs.
