Martha Janke

Martha Janke, 92, of Benton Harbor, went home to meet her Lord and Savior, Monday, December 15, 2003 at Lakeland Specialty Hospital, Berrien Center. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the First Church of God, 2627 Niles Ave., St. Joseph with Rev. Robert Confer officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens. Friends may call Friday from 4-7 P.M. at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Martha was born June 26, 1911 in Portland, Oregon to Edward & Hulda (Zipel) Conrad. On August 29, 1931 she married Edward Janke in Dowagiac. Together they operated a fruit farm on Highland Avenue in Benton Harbor for more than 40 years. Martha was a member of the First Church of God and a life member of the Women of the Church of God. She was a member of the Work a Day Club. Mrs. Janke is survived by her son-Donald (Joy) Janke of Benton Harbor; two grand daughters-Diane Janke of Park Ridge, IL, Sharon (Brian) Carpenter of Vestal, NY; two greatgrandsons-Nathan Andrew & Joshua David Carpenter; and a sister in law-Elizabeth Rose of Dowagiac; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward on September 17, 1990; her parents, and two brothers-Herman & Alex Conrad.
