Bessie's Obituary
Bessie L. Owca, 91, of St. Joseph, went to meet her Lord &
Savior on Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at Golden Place where
she resided. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at
11:30 A.M. Friday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral
Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Burial will follow at
Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Friends may call
beginning at 10:30 A.M. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Zion Evangelical United Church
of Christ, St. Joseph or Hospice at Home. Those wishing to

Mrs. Owca was born November 2, 1911 in Carbon, IN to
Charles & Gertrude (McNanny) Saltsgiver. On November 1,
1931 she married Walter Owca in South Bend, IN. Bessie
was employed by Rimes & Hildebrand in St. Joseph for many
years. She retired from Tri-County Bookkeepers in Benton
Harbor. Bessie was a member of Zion Evangelical United
Church of Christ in St. Joseph, a former member of the St.
Joseph-Lincoln Senior Center, and in her day was an avid
traveler, seamstress, and gardener.
Bessie is survived by her son-Donald (Marla) Owca of
Coloma; her daughter-Lucille Cassidy of St. Joseph; eight
grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several
nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband
Walter on February 12, 1957, and her sister Lucille Mahler.
