Richard's Obituary

Richard’s life began June 23, 1939 in Dowagiac, the son of Elmer “Doc” and Lila (Roberts) Ivens. He served his country in the United States Army from 1958 until 1961. Richard was united in marriage to the former Patti Pompey on May 29, 1981 in Dowagiac. He was employed by Sundstrand Corporation for over 30 years in Dowagiac. Richard’s loving family includes his daughters Latishea Varnesdeel of Indianapolis, Sharmekia Lee of Houston, TX, and Selena Ivens; grandchildren Nicki Ivens, Ryan Varnesdeel, Jerry Owens, Daijia Greer, Timishea Lewis and Timea Lewis; several great grandchildren, a sister Sherry Ciessolki of South Bend, special nieces Tara Alderman, Monique Pompey and Heather Berkley, sister in laws Renee (Larry) Starrett of Dowagiac, Debi (Ernest) Berkley of Dowagiac and brother in law Kevin Pompey of Chicago as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Richard passed away on Wednesday April 25, 2012 at his daughter’s home in Indianapolis. He is preceded in death by his wife Patti Ivens, brothers Gordon and Raymond Ivens and a sister Lou Ann Crump. His family will gather with friends at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 5, 2012 at Yazel & Clark Chapel for a memorial service with military honors.
