Berniece M. Weed

Berniece Margaret Weed, 80, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went to be with the Lord on Friday February 22, 2002 at Lakeland Hospital- St.Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church, with Father Larry Kroll officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 ? 8:00 PM Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph; burial at Cavalry Cemetery. Because of her love of learning and children, memorials may be made to the Readiness Center. Berniece was born February 24, 1921 in Riverside, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late William Francis and Margaret (LeCoq) Connell. In January of 1943 she married Edgar Grant Weed of St. Joseph and they were blessed with 12 children. After her husband?s death she attended Lake Michigan College and graduated from Western Michigan University with a Master Degree in Remedial Reading. Berniece taught in the Benton Harbor School System until she retired. She was a member of Alpha Beta Epsilon Sorority, Retired Teachers Association, Parents without Partners and received the ?Mother of the Year? award. Survivors include four sons- Thomas (Lou) Weed of Michigan, Edward (Jan) Weed of California, Richard Weed of Michigan, Stephen Weed of California; six daughters- Kathleen Weed of St. Joseph, Frances (John) Chilton of Benton Harbor, Judith (Tom) Englesby of Wisconsin, Dorothy (Richard) Oberheu of St. Joseph, Margaret Weed of St. Joseph, Patricia Weed of St. Joseph; eleven grandchildren- Christopher, David , Grant, Michael, Amanda, Kyle, Rudy, Jacob, Lucas, Stephen Jr., Elizabeth, ; 4 Great Grandchildren; five sisters – Dorothy White of Indiana, Mildred Murphy of California , Loretta Graham of California, Margaret Nord of California, Rose Marie Tipton of California, Three Brothers- William (Jean) Connell of Indiana , John (Beverly) Connell of Indiana , Philip (Lynda) Connell of Coloma Michigan and a sister in law Margaret Weed of St. Joseph. Preceded in death by her husband Edgar Weed in 1966, two sons Robert Weed and Kevin Weed; two sisters Mary Ziegert and Patricia Carr; a brother George Connell
