Robert's Obituary

Bob's life began on February 25, 1925 in Muskegon, the son of Clarence and Susan (Wood) Mullen. He was a graduate of Dowagiac Central High School and Michigan State University. Bob served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Jean Keyser on January 18, 1947 at the Federated Church in Dowagiac. Bob was the treasurer of the Wolverine Mutual Insurance Company for 36 years. He was a member of the Dowagiac Rotary Club, serving as president in 1969. He was honored as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow in 1988 and honored with the Red Rose of Rotary Award in 2008. Bob was a loyal member of the Dowagiac Elk's Lodge #889 and served as a coach for the Elk's ritual team that won the state competition and Exalted Ruler in 1961-62. He was a member of the barber shop quartet, the Tune Vendors from 1947-1952 and the group won the Michigan state championship in 1950. He was a member of the Federated Church. Bob was a member of the McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home bowling team and could be found most mornings at Caruso's Candy Kitchen having coffee with his friends. His loving family includes his wife of 64 years Dorothy of Dowagiac, his sons Scott (Donna) Mullen of Charlotte, NC and Jeffrey Mullen of Okemos, six grandchildren Caitlin, Jillian, Michael, Kelsey, Hayley and Matthew Mullen and his sister in law Helen Leich of Dowagiac. Bob passed away on Thursday March 17, 2011 at Forest Glen Assisted Living in Dowagiac. He is preceded in death by a son Michael in 1959, sister Beatrice Proctor, and brothers Richard and Jack Mullen. His family will gather with friends on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Yazel & Clark Chapel where his funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. led by Pastors Rob and Jen Lowe of the Federated Covenant Church. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery in Dowagiac. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Southwestern Michigan College Foundation.
