Carlton's Obituary
Carl's life began on October 15, 1921 in Silver Creek Township, Dowagiac, the son of Clayton and Helen (Arter) Hewitt. He was the first of three children and a life long resident of Southwestern Michigan. Carl grew up on his parents' family farm in Berrien Center where he helped his father farm with a horse and plow. He was a 1940 graduate of Eau Claire High School and went on to become a lifelong farmer. He was married on February 1, 1948 to Helen Mantai in Watervliet; they raised two children, Larry and Patty, on the family farm in Silver Creek Township. For many years Carl enjoyed wintering in Harlingen, TX with his wife. He was an avid John Deere collector and enjoyed restoring antique John Deere tractors which he displayed at local events and rode in parades. His family was his joy and he was especially proud of his grandchildren. Carl was a member of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church, Michigan Farm Bureau and the Michiana Two Cylinder Club. His loving family includes his son Larry (Julie) Hewitt of Dowagiac, his grandchildren Laura Hewitt of Louisville, KY., and Katie and Clay Hewitt of Dowagiac as well as one brother John (Joyce) Hewitt of Berrien Center. Carl passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 26th with his family at his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, daughter Patty, brother Dean and his parents. His family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Yazel-Clark Chapel (405 Center Street, Dowagiac). His funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Silver Creek United Methodist Church, led by Pastor Julie Greyerbiehl. Carl will be laid to rest at Mission Hill Memorial Gardens in Niles.
